The Movie:
This is an entirely forgettable movie. How forgettable is it? I actually watched it a couple of weeks ago and now that I am writing this review now, I'm hard pressed to remember any real details about the story! I guess this could be described as one of those films that features a character on a downward spiral into depths of death and destruction. In this case the subject is played by Robert Downey Jr. who plays a rich Beverly Hills brat with a nasty drug habit getting into all kinds of trouble to support this habit (gee, what a stretch this role turned out to be...)
Perhaps the one thing from this film that did end up sticking with me was that the way this film was shot left it with a most incredible look that I can only describe as being "1980's sheen" -- a glimmering, glamorous look awash in bright pastel colors -- it really did look just like what I remembered the late 80's looking like when I was growing up in the L.A. area. Rest assured, if I ever end up making a movie set in the 80's, I will come back to this film to get some pointers on putting the overall look together!
The DVD:
Though the anamorphic video transfer exhibited a bit of softness (though not more than expected from a film of this era), the aforementioned 80's sheen shone through brightly. The soundtrack however, had a hollowness to it that made it difficult to hear dialog at times. Special features consisted of three anamorphic widescreen trailers for Less Than Zero, five TV spots, and trailers for five other movies, and that's pretty much it!
