The Movie:
I've come to enjoy director Stephen Soderberg's later work like Ocean's Eleven, Traffic, and Out of Sight, so I thought I'd dig back to the beginning of his work and see what his early work was like.
For being called Sex, Lies and Videotape and rated "R" by the MPAA, this film sure didn't have much boobies in it... in fact, it had none at all, though that to me was the least of this film's problems. I found the story not all that compelling, being comprised of mostly one-dimensional characters and even dragging a bit at times.
Basically what you have is the story of a man played by Peter Gallagher who is and has been cheating on his wife (Andie MacDowell) with her sister (Laura San Giacomo). Then one day an old college buddy of Peter Gallagher shows up in town. Turns out he's got this little fetish for interviewing women about their sex lives and getting it all on video tape. And as it turns out, all kinds of secrets come out, and all hell breaks loose in this little corner of the world.
The DVD:
This DVD release might just be out of print now, which is all just as good as the video transfer was pretty mediocre, exhibiting an overall softness and lack of contrast. The audio was similarly dull. Special features comprise of an audio commentary track and a trailer, and that's about it. By the way, this is a dual-sided disc with the widescreen version on one side, and 4:3 on the other.
