The Movie:
I'd never run into a Jackie Chan movie I didn't like, but I gotta be honest, I didn't like Mr. Nice Guy. It just wasn't as funny as some of his other movies. The action scenes weren't as good as some of his other movies, and even though a strong plot has never been the strong point of any of his movies, the plot just wasn't as good as some of his other movies.
I think it all just seemed a bit too formulaic, like they set out to make a "Jackie Chan movie" and just took all the usual parts from all his movies and put together something that ended up just being bland and boring. And while it certainly isn't the worst movie I've ever seen, I have very little good to say about it.
If you're looking for a Jackie Chan flick, I would much rather recommend Jackie Chan's Who Am I.
The DVD:
This is a dual-sided disc, with an anamorphic widescreen transfer on one side, and a pan and scan transfer on the other. Although I haven't actually checked out the pan and scan transfer, I shudder to think of how it looks because the widescreen version had such tight framing on so many shots, that a lot of stuff would have to be left off the sides of the screen. Like the movie, the image quality wasn't the best, brightest, or cleanest I've ever seen, but it served its purpose well enough. The 5.1 audio didn't stand out either, with not much being done in the way of surround encoding, but at least the dialog was clear and understandable.
Special features include a theatrical trailer in anamorphic widescreen with 5.1 audio, as well as a little text bio on Jackie Chan. Buried deep inside those bio pages are some trailers and movie clips from other New Line movies featuring Jackie Chan, also in anamorphic widescreen with 5.1 audio.
Overall, an uninspiring DVD release for an uninspiring film, in my opinion.
