The Movie:
Ah, the notrious Dinosaur -- the Disney movie that most people don't even know was ever made. The Disney movie which some people credit with the dubious distinction of ruining the new Disney's California Adventure theme park. How?
Well, simply put, Dinosaur is a $200 million version of The Land Before Time. The story is not any more complex or detailed or original -- dinosaurs living on a dying planet search for a safe haven of lush green pastures and flowing water. The difference is the whole thing is animated with photorealistic looking Dinosaurs using state of the art digital animation technology, layered on top of live action film shots of beautiful, tropical backgrounds.
Now there's nothing wrong with computer animation, and there's nothing wrong with The Land Before Time (which I believe cost $12 million to make). But when you spend $200 million making a movie, you'd think you'd get something a little more sophisticated than that! This movie, though visually spectacular, is just one big stinking pile of poop. Aside from the digital animation, this movie has absolutely no artistic merit whatsoever. Seriously. I have never seen a movie that looked SO good that turned out so bad.
I think a lot of my disappointment with this movie was that the very first trailer for this movie just showed a runaway dinosaur egg going on a crazy adventure before hatching... no dialog. No words or anything like that. I was excited! I thought it was going to be this rich story told artistically with no words... but a few weeks later the second trailer came out... and it showed monkeys... monkeys that talk. My bubble had been burst. The Disney company took something that could have potentially been incredible, beautiful and amazing and turned it into... well... The Land Before Time. And the worst part is that they actually call it "Walt Disney's Dinosaur". I can imagine Walt just turning in his grave every time those words are uttered in that sequence. Lord knows after I'm dead I don't anyone putting my name on anything as crappy as this haha.
Now on to how this movie ruined Disney's California Adventure -- some people have speculated that this movie lost so much money that it took away from the amount of money Disney could spend on the theme park. This is of course, speculation, but I'd believe it.
The DVD:
The video and audio on this disc are fantastic but this movie is so crappy, I don't feel like writing any more about it... like it wouldn't be worth my time... and this is only the standard edition. They also have a "collectors" 2-Disc edition, but unless you collect crappy movies, I can't see you wanting it. Or, I suppose, if you were interested in the computer animation process which I'm sure they go into great detail about on that second disc.
But seriously. This is only like the 2nd movie I have given a rating of "zero" to... and I'm pretty sure it will stand for a long time as the most expensive movie that will get such a rating from me!
