The Movie:
Ghost World is a movie that I liked, but I bet there are more than a few people that hated it. Actually, those people probably didn't even bother to see this movie. But anyway. This movie follows a recent high school graduate, Enid (played by Thora Birch), as she makes her way into the "real world"... sounds pretty standard, but this ain't just another teen movie.
The main characters of this movie are eccentric and extremely cynical, to the point of being downright mean. They even annoyed me at first. Heck, I don't think too highly of those "eccentric" types that think they are so much better than everyone else in the world... even if I may just be one of those people myself! But even I was able to find some sympathy for Enid as her world seemed to come crashing down around her, just as things were finally looking up.
Steve Buscemi delivered a delightful performance as he always does, and the host of other minor characters, though mostly flat caricatures of the different people you might find along the way in anyone’s life, served to enrich the emotional texture of this film. So yeah. If you can get past the biting elitist cynicism of Enid at the beginning of the film, you may just find yourself rewarded by a thoughtful, yet funny film.
The DVD:
The anamorphic video transfer of this DVD is fantastic, with great clarity and bold color, and a clean look that still maintains some filmic quality. The audio was also clean and clear, but mostly focused on the center channel as this is a dialog driven movie. As far as extras go, you get a handful of unremarkable deleted scenes, a theatrical trailer (in anamorphic widescreen), plus trailers for The Princess Bride and The Terminator DVD's, and that's about it. I think I definitely would have liked to have gotten a director's commentary track, but no such luck. But if you like this movie, you'll be more than satisfied with its presentation on this disc.
