The Movie: I had to wait a day or two after watching this movie before reviewing it because I wasn't really sure what I thought about it. But I guess my overall verdict is that it's pretty good, and worth watching. Of course, having won five Academy Awards, there's quite a few people out there that probably think The Deer Hunter is better than just "pretty good".

The story follows three young steel workers from Pennsylvania who go off to be heroes in the Vietnam war, where they discover that war isn't all it's cracked up to be. This movie is three hours long, and in my opinion, it took way too long to get going. It isn't until about an hour into the movie that anything really happens... but once it gets going, it really gets going.

It's suspenseful, it's intense, and it's "psychological"... whatever that really means, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that it makes you consider things that you probably never would under normal circumstances. Christopher Walken and Robert DeNiro are awesome in this movie, and there's also a pretty young looking Meryl Streep and John Cazale in there too.

So yeah. I liked it, but it was kind of a lot of work to get through it, but it was worth it in the end, I think. Gosh, this is the worst review ever haha.

The DVD:

The disc portion of this review is not so hard to write. This DVD is pretty crappy. The transfer is of the non-anamorphic variety, and it had not the best contrast, quite a bit of grain, quite a bit of dust and specks, and it rang with the artifacts of excessive edge enhancement. My guess would be (and I have nothing to back this up) is that this is probably a reused laserdisc transfer.

The audio was similar in quality, flat, with very little use (if any) of the surround channels... nothing too exciting going on in there. Special features were also pretty weak, with a theatrical trailer, and some on-screen text production notes, and that's about it.
