The Movie:
I rented this movie because for years on the riceboard people have been saying that this movie has a really great car chase scene in it, and that they really liked the Mustang in the movie. Hell, last year, Ford even came out with a "Bullitt Edition" of the Mustang.
This movie bored me. Starring Steve McQueen, it was just too full of cliché bad-good cop battling the crooked system while the girl gets left in the dust thing that had already been done a million times before, and has been done a million times since. And the car chase scene wasn't even that great. I mean really, how many times can they pass the same green Volkswagen?
There were only two high points in this film for me. One was discovering that Robert Duvall was the taxi cab driver, and the other was trying to figure out if that big hotel was also used in Vertigo. I do not recommend this movie to anyone but the most hardcore Steve McQueen or Ford Mustang fans.
The DVD:
This is a dual-sided disc with anamorphic widescreen on one side, and pan and scan on the other side. The transfer was quite clean with very little dust and dirt present, but it was a bit blurry, but to tell you the truth, I prefer a slightly blurry transfer to one that has had a lot of edge enhancement added later on to give some sort of illusion of clarity.
The audio was flat, lacking in both treble and bass, sounding, I suppose, exactly how I would imagine 1968 recording technology would allow. Also on the disc is the theatrical trailer, cast/crew bios, and an original featurette on the making of the film.
One cool thing about this disc is that on the pan and scan side, everything is in a 4:3 format, and anamorphic side, everything is in an anamorphic widescreen format, including the making-of which has been cropped down to 1.85:1. Nice touch.
