The Movie:
Perhaps I should rate this movie an "11" on a scale of 1-10? This Is Spinal Tap is a hilarious mockumentary about a fictional rock group on the downslope of their formerly superstar career. They're back on tour in the U.S., but where 6 years prior they were playing to 20,000 seat arenas, now they are playing to 1,500 seat clubs.
We follow them on tour as they deal with the hardships of being on tour, of dealing with record companies, and dealing with their waning fame. But the whole thing is a big spoof of the entire rock and roll world, and there's probably just as much truth in there as there is ridiculous hilarity. Definitely a great comedy, worthy of being viewed by anyone who has ever been interested in rock music.
Another fun thing about this film is there are a whole lot of famous people in really small roles, like Billy Crystal and Dana Carvey as mime waiters at a party, etc. etc.
This is a very fun movie. You should see it!
The DVD:
The video on this disc seems to be free of any kind of compression artifacts, and the transfer contains all of the detail of the original film, including the grain consistent with the 16mm film it was shot on.
Audio has been remixed in to a 5.1 mix is is pretty unspectacular in general, though that's not surprising, considering the nature of this film.
There are quite a bit of special features, starting with some hilarious audio on the main menu screen. You'll also find a commentary track with the voices of... no, not the directors, but the characters who make up the Spinal Tap band! There's also deleted footage, a making of, music videos, and of course, trailers. A good bit of stuff there.
