The Movie:
The Corruptor is the 1999 movie starring Chow Yun-Fat as a police officer in New York's Chinatown, and Mark Wahlberg as his new partner who is not well accepted at first due to his inexperience, and as they say in the movie, the people in Chinatown don't talk to white people, and they don't like cops, and this guy is a white cop.
This is an action movie, there's no doubt about it, and you'll find some pretty exciting gunplay, and a great car chase. The plot isn't the exactly the strongest point of this film, but it's full of enough twists and turns to keep you interested as Chow Yun Fat and Marky Mark battle organized crime in Chinatown. Overall I'd rate this movie as being somewhere between "just alright" and "pretty good". The action sequences are definitely not Chow Yun Fat's best work, on the other hand, the quality of the production and the storyline are better than the action movies he made previous to The Corruptor. And it's definitely better than The Big Hit, Mark Wahlberg's previous action movie.
The DVD:
New Line put together a pretty cool DVD here, with one of the coolest menu designs I've seen in a long time, and this design theme carries over into the text-based special features as well, such as the cast/crew bios. Since I already started talking about special features, I might as well mention the rest of them. You'll find a commentary track, a making-of featurette, an anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) trailer, and a music video by a guy I've never heard of but I guess the song is in the movie. There is also supposedly some DVD-ROM content, but even though I do have a DVD-ROM drive in my computer, my movies rarely make it in there. But overall, a pretty filled out set of features.
The video transfer is above average, but far from the best I've seen. It's slightly grainy, and doesn't seem to exhibit the best possible contrast. The audio was above average as well, with a pretty good surround mix, but perhaps did not demonstrate the fullest dynamic range possible.
But all in all, this is a pretty good DVD, with a decent movie, some decent features, and again, the slickest menu's I've seen in a long time.
