The Movie:
Willow is a fantastic fantasy (hmm... that's redundant, isn't it?) set in a land of trolls and little people, and even littler people, and sorcerers and castles and evil queens and all that stuff. This is an absolutely beautiful looking movie, with some amazing vistas and great set and costume design. But the story is somewhat generic. The entire opening of the film is exactly the same as the biblical story of Moses but with some genders reversed. A prophecy has been made saying that a newborn girl would be the one to bring the end of the evil queen's reign, so the queen orders that all newborn baby girls be inspected and/or killed. Of course, the one baby that the prophecy was about escapes by being wrapped up and sent floating on a little raft down a river to safety. I mean c'mon, can you rip off the story of Moses any more than that?
Though a bit slow at times, Willow did entertain and it turned out to be a pretty good movie overall. And as I said, it's quite spectacular, visually.
The DVD:
The anamorphic video transfer is damned near perfect and delivers the film in all of its stunning glory. The 5.1 audio also impressed, with great ambient surround effects with plenty of directional play going on. At times it would actually seem like there's a forest in my living room if I closed my eyes.
The special features section of this disc included a multitude of theatrical trailers and TV spots, the original 1988 behind the scenes featurette, and a little documentary about the then-breakthrough technology of "morphing" with computer graphics. There's also some talk with the cast and crew, still photos, and directors commentary. Overall a pretty well-loaded features section.
So yes, if you love this movie, I highly recommend this well put together DVD.
