The Movie:
Another in the long list of movies I haven't seen before that have been reviewed for this page is here. I actually put this on my Netflix list like 6 months ago and it only just now got here... must be really popular!
Anyway, I had heard a lot about this movie before, and I'm glad I saw it because it definitely did not disappoint. Full of some witty humor, and a great performance by Dustin Hoffman, The Graduate is successful at making you feel what Hoffman is feeling, and squirm when Hoffman is squirming under the thumb of Mrs. Robinson, played by a sultry Anne Bancroft.
If you've been totally oblivious to pop-culture, this is the story of a young recent college graduate who is seduced by his father's business partner's wife, and ends up falling in love with her daughter. Many, many, many, many references in countless movies, TV shows, literature and music today come from this movie... and I'm sad I hadn't seen it sooner! Much recommended!
The DVD:
This is a pretty mediocre disc, with a letterboxed, non-anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer (ugh), with desaturated color, and what look like crushed whites.
Sound was presented in its original mono format, although, for a movie like this, you really don't need much more than that.
Special features include a theatrical trailer (definitely not digital remastered, as Cami put it), and two shorts that looked like they came from the same interview with Dustin Hoffman, both looking pretty old, especially since they referred to the 25th anniversary of The Graduate... which was about 10 years ago! But the movie itself makes it worth it all, especially since this is the only release of this movie on DVD.
